How to Use Date Formulas for Allowed Posting Periods in Business Central BC28.

Hi All,

Learn how BC28 automates posting date restrictions using date formulas in General Ledger Setup, User Setup, and Journal Templates.

Business Central BC28 introduces date formulas for allowed posting periods, enabling dynamic posting windows that automatically adjust based on the current date.

Managing posting periods in Business Central often requires repetitive manual maintenance. Finance teams typically update allowed posting dates every month to prevent users from posting transactions into incorrect periods.

Business Central 2026 release wave 1 (BC28) simplifies this process by introducing date formulas for posting restrictions.

This feature allows administrators to automate posting date ranges using dynamic formulas instead of manually updating fixed dates.

What Are Posting Date Formulas in BC28?

Posting date formulas allow Business Central to dynamically calculate allowed posting ranges based on today’s date.

Instead of entering static dates, administrators can use formulas such as:

  • <-CM>
  • <0D>
  • <-30D>

These formulas automatically update the posting window as time progresses.

Where Can You Configure Posting Date Formulas?

The feature is available in:

General Ledger Setup

Global company-level posting control.

User Setup

User-specific posting restrictions.

General Journal Templates

Journal-specific posting validation.

How Do Posting Date Formulas Work?

Business Central evaluates formulas during posting validation.

Current Month Only

From:
<-CM>

To:
<CM>

Result:
Only the current month is allowed.

Rolling 30-Day Window

From:
<-30D>

To:
<0D>

Result:
Allows posting within the last 30 days.

Previous Month Close

From:
<-1M-CM>

To:
<-CM-1D>

Result:
Restricts posting to the previous accounting month.

Priority of Posting Restrictions

Business Central validates posting restrictions in the following order:

  1. User Setup
  2. General Ledger Setup
  3. General Journal Templates

User-specific restrictions always take priority.

Fixed Dates vs Date Formulas

You can use:

  • formulas
  • fixed dates
  • or a mix of both

Important behavior:

  • entering a formula clears the fixed date
  • entering a fixed date clears the formula

This flexibility supports hybrid posting control scenarios.

Real-World Use Cases

Month-End Financial Controls

Automatically enforce current-month posting policies.

Rolling Adjustment Windows

Allow corrections for the previous 30 days.

Multi-Department Governance

Apply stricter posting controls to selected users.

Reduced Administrative Maintenance

Eliminate recurring manual posting date updates.
