How to Use the Copy Location Feature in Business Central 2026 Wave 1 (BC28)

Hi All,

Learn how the new Copy Location feature in Business Central BC28 helps duplicate warehouse locations faster and reduce manual setup time.

Business Central BC28 introduces Copy Location, allowing users to duplicate existing warehouse/location setups instead of recreating configurations manually.

Managing multiple warehouse locations in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central often involves repetitive configuration work. Consultants and administrators traditionally relied on manual setup or Configuration Packages to create similar locations.

With Business Central 2026 release wave 1 (BC28), Microsoft introduced a new feature called Copy Location, making it significantly easier to duplicate existing location setups.

What Is the Copy Location Feature in BC28?

The Copy Location feature allows users to create a new location by duplicating configuration from an existing location.

This helps:

  • standardize warehouse setup
  • reduce manual work
  • speed up implementations
  • minimize setup inconsistencies

The feature is available directly from:

  • Locations page
  • Location Card page

Why Was This Feature Needed?

Before BC28:

  • locations were created manually
  • repeated warehouse setup consumed time
  • consultants often used Configuration Packages
  • inconsistencies occurred between warehouse setups

This became a major issue for:

  • multi-site deployments
  • franchise businesses
  • distribution companies
  • rapid warehouse expansion projects

How to Copy Existing Locations in Business Central 28

Step 1 — Open Locations

Use:

  • Alt + Q
  • Search for “Locations”

Step 2 — Select Existing Location

Choose the location that already contains the setup you want to reuse.

Step 3 — Click Copy Location

If not visible:

  • Click More Options
  • Navigate to:
    • Actions
    • Other
    • Copy Location

Step 4 — Configure New Location

Enter:

  • new location code
  • additional setup details

Step 5 — Complete the Process

Click OK to create the duplicated location.

What Does Copy Location Actually Copy?

The feature primarily copies:

  • location configuration
  • warehouse settings
  • operational setup values

It does NOT copy:

  • inventory quantities
  • ledger entries
  • transactions

Real-World Use Cases

Multi-Warehouse Rollouts

Companies opening multiple warehouses can quickly duplicate standard configurations.

Franchise Deployments

Retail businesses with standardized setups benefit significantly.

Testing Environments

Consultants can rapidly create sandbox warehouse setups for testing.
