#msdyn365bc - Changes related to Reports in 2020 Wave2.

Hi Readers,

In series of articles about What's new in Business Central 2020 Release Wave2, in this article we will see what changes are done for Reports.

This article we provide all different ways that we can set these soft limits for Report Executions in business central.

Report performance and easier to access are two areas that Microsoft worked during this release.

This also adds an extra step for developer to make sure that performance of the reports is within the soft limits.

There are two changes that are added in Business Central related to Report Execution.

1. Ability for developers and end users to override the system setting for maximum time a report can run.

This feature enables a Business Central host to set resource limits in the system, without disrupting users who might need to exceed the limits from time to time.

Who and Where can set these Values?

A system administrator can set soft and hard limits on report execution time on the server.

  • This is only allowed on-prem.
  • You as administrator can set these values in Service Tier with Six Setting Listed Below.
    • ReportMaxRows
    • ReportTimeout
    • ReportMaxDocuments
    • ReportDefaultMaxRows
    • ReportDefaultTimeout
    • ReportDefaultMaxDocuments

Default Values are what will be available in Request Page.

ReportMaxRows - Specifies the maximum number of rows that can be included in this report.
ReportTimeout - Specifies the maximum time it can take to render the report.
ReportMaxDocuments - Specifies the maximum number of documents that can be included in this report.

If any of these parameter get exceeded during execution, the report will be canceled.

A developer can set a maximum timeout in report metadata.
  • During Report Development in AL, Developer can set these values in the Report Design.

That's not it End users at runtime, can override the metadata setting.

  • In Every Report Request page there is a New tab available to override the default values that are set by administrator in Service Tier or by Developer during design time.

The soft limits set on the Business Central online server are expected to be six hours for version 17.0, with a goal of one hour.

Another Report related feature added is -

Report request page can open multiple previews.

  • With Business Central 2020 release wave 2, a report request can open multiple previews one by one without closing the main window. This unblocks users who try out different report parameters, so that they stay focused on a given report and become more productive.
  • When a set of parameters is finalized, the user has an opportunity to print or export the report. Printing or downloading is also possible from the report preview page.

Hope you find the information useful. Let me know your views as comment to this article.

Stay tuned for more.

Regards,
Saurav Dhyani
